Like most-things-chart/graph/illustration this is a simplification of an otherwise complex division of economy. Still, it’s pretty convincing. By redditor atrubetskoy, it shows the US’s GDP split 50/50 between urban centers and rural areas; obviously the map does not take into account ALL urban areas, and appears to include the counties that cities reside within or adjacent to. That is it does make one wonder what a purely urban vs non-urban stack would look like. This map shows the top-generating areas overall; the plains and Rockies-West are pretty barren:
