{"id":474,"date":"2007-01-17T00:14:48","date_gmt":"2007-01-17T07:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/2007\/01\/16\/turning-the-pages\/"},"modified":"2009-03-17T06:19:43","modified_gmt":"2009-03-17T13:19:43","slug":"turning-the-pages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/turning-the-pages\/","title":{"rendered":"turning the pages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most people who know me well (or even for 40 seconds for that matter) know my fondness for books, libraries, archives, etc. If I had the means &#8211; that is, if I didn&#8217;t have <a href=\"http:\/\/torrents.to\/\">all<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/ohhla.com\/anonymous\/mos_def\/magic\/dollar.mos.txt\">these<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burncopy.com\/year_in_the_internet_06.html\">other<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fleshbot.com\/sex\/sex-toys\/fleshbots-top-ten-sex-toys-of-2006-224200.php\">distractions<\/a> &#8211; I&#8217;d probably form, become Director of, and inevitably check myself in to the first Biblioholics Anonymous.<\/p>\n<p>One place I used to live, I was so short on square footage that I built a shelf onto my bed (the frame was basically just a box with the mattress in-laid, IKEA brand I think, so I just screwed in a shelf from end to end) and books would always spill onto me while I slept: Russian Painted Shop Signs, The Great Exhibitions, issues of ArtForum, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkerart.org\/archive\/8\/A9739147A35626FC6162.htm\">Global Conceptualism: Points of Origin 1950s-1980s<\/a><\/em> (conceptualism while you sleep, <em>whoops<\/em>!). Anyhow, point being, I love the books.<\/p>\n<p>So you can imagine how excited I am by the British Library&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/onlinegallery\/ttp\/ttpbooks.html\">&#8216;Turning the Pages&#8217;<\/a> website, in which the B.L. has scanned in and made available some of their rare books and printed items &#8211; including works like <a class=\"imagelink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/01\/british-library-turning-the-pages-scotland.jpg\" title=\"British Library - Turning the Pages\" rel=\"lightbox\">this image of Scotland turned sideways<\/a> in the first atlas of Europe compiled by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerardus_Mercator\">Gerardus Mercator<\/a>.
