{"id":460,"date":"2007-01-15T16:51:29","date_gmt":"2007-01-15T23:51:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/2007\/01\/15\/impossible-to-describe-it-all-happens-so-fast\/"},"modified":"2009-03-17T06:22:44","modified_gmt":"2009-03-17T13:22:44","slug":"impossible-to-describe-it-all-happens-so-fast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/impossible-to-describe-it-all-happens-so-fast\/","title":{"rendered":"impossible to describe (it all happens so fast)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seven months ago I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/2006\/06\/30\/friday-evening-art-market\/\">commented on<\/a> an area of Brooklyn where a friend of mine then-lived (he since moved on, for obvious reasons and all-for-the-better!) and where development was booming.<\/p>\n<p>Well a few days ago <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intel\/2007\/01\/new_williamsburg_condoprice_re_1.html\">New York Magazine commented on<\/a> that same building\/area, which has set a new record for condos in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, at $3.8mil.<\/p>\n<p>Williamsburg is regarded as one of the first havens of artist-refugees escaping the real-estate hype of Manhattan. When you talk to anybody who has been around for as long as I am old, they tell you, like a bit of local lore learned through oral history, that there was a time when taxis wouldn&#8217;t even drive fares into Williamsburg &#8211; too dangerous and not worth the money. Sometimes the person telling you this is telling you because they find it unfortunate how things have developed, they wish it could be a little like the way it was; sometimes the person telling you this is telling you because they&#8217;re boasting or think it &#8216;cool&#8217; that their hood used to have a bit of notoriety, which I&#8217;m sure it did.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, things have changed, that much is obvious.<\/p>\n<p>The question remains, how are artists to survive, to not only afford living expenses but the expenses of developing work, in an age when the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/01\/14\/realestate\/14house.html?ref=realestate\">NYTimes is reporting on &#8216;how to find a sub-$1mil home&#8217;<\/a>?<\/p>\n<div class='ctx-module-container ctx_default_placement ctx-clearfix'><\/div><span class=\"ctx-article-root\"><!-- --><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seven months ago I commented on an area of Brooklyn where a friend of mine then-lived (he since moved on, for obvious reasons and all-for-the-better!) and where development was booming.
