{"id":36,"date":"2006-08-17T13:09:28","date_gmt":"2006-08-17T20:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/2006\/08\/17\/ubuntu-install-sunbird\/"},"modified":"2009-03-17T07:45:22","modified_gmt":"2009-03-17T14:45:22","slug":"ubuntu-install-sunbird","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/ubuntu-install-sunbird\/","title":{"rendered":"Ubuntu &#8211; install Sunbird"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve recently migrated a few of my workstations to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubuntu.org\/\">Ubuntu Linux<\/a>, and so far I&#8217;m satisfied and excited with the useability of this operating system.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I had major trouble with on Fedora was installing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/projects\/calendar\/sunbird\/\">Sunbird<\/a>. probably my naivety but nonetheless the process was a breeze (no pun intended, for those in the know) on Ubuntu. I followed these command lines I found on another site:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Download and Install<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>From your terminal:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>cd \/opt<\/p>\n<p><em>Changes us into the \/opt directory<\/em><\/p>\n<p>sudo wget -c ftp:\/\/ftp.mozilla.org\/pub\/mozilla.org\/calendar\/sunbird\/releases\/0.3a2\/sunbird-0.3a2.en-US.linux-i686.tar.bz2<\/p>\n<p><em>downloads Sunbird to your \/opt folder<\/em><\/p>\n<p>sudo tar -xvf sunbird-0.3a2.en-US.linux-i686.tar.bz2<\/p>\n<p><em>this extracts Sunbird into a new Sunbird folder in the \/opt directory<\/em><\/p>\n<p>sudo chown -R root:root \/opt\/sunbird\/<\/p>\n<p><em>this changes the sunbird folder owner to root<\/em><\/p>\n<p>sudo gedit \/usr\/bin\/sunbird.sh<\/p>\n<p><em>Now we&#8217;re placing a file in \/usr\/bin\/ that tells the OS how to start sunbird<br \/>\nPlace the following text into the new document<\/em><\/p>\n<p>cd \/opt\/sunbird\/<br \/>\n.\/sunbird<\/p>\n<p><em>Save and close the new document<\/em><\/p>\n<p>sudo chmod +x \/usr\/bin\/sunbird.sh<\/p>\n<p><em>this changes our sunbird.sh file to an executable<\/em><\/p>\n<p>sudo gedit \/usr\/share\/applications\/sunbird.desktop<\/p>\n<p><em>Now we&#8217;re creating the icon in your Applicaitons menu<br \/>\nPlace the following text in the new file<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[Desktop Entry]<br \/>\nName=Sunbird<br \/>\nComment=Calendar Application<br \/>\nExec=sunbird.sh<br \/>\nIcon=\/opt\/sunbird\/chrome\/icons\/default\/default.xpm<br \/>\nTerminal=false<br \/>\nType=Application<br \/>\nCategories=Application;Office;<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nSave and close the new document<\/em><\/p>\n<p>killall gnome-panel<\/p>\n<p><em>this restarts the gnome panels Go to Applications > Office > Sunbird<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m posting this to help others searching for this topic, as well as to remind myself in case I need to do it again!<\/p>\n<p>Related websites:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/knowledge76.com\/index.php\/Sunbird_Installation_on_Ubuntu_Breezy\">original post &#8220;Sunbird Installation on Ubuntu Breezy&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<div class='ctx-module-container ctx_default_placement ctx-clearfix'><\/div><span class=\"ctx-article-root\"><!-- --><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve recently migrated a few of my workstations to Ubuntu Linux, and so far I&#8217;m satisfied and excited with the useability of this operating system.
