{"id":342,"date":"2006-12-22T15:14:40","date_gmt":"2006-12-22T22:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/2006\/12\/22\/blacked-out-censorship-from-the-white-house\/"},"modified":"2009-03-17T06:54:45","modified_gmt":"2009-03-17T13:54:45","slug":"blacked-out-censorship-from-the-white-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/blacked-out-censorship-from-the-white-house\/","title":{"rendered":"blacked out censorship from the white house"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m still piecing it all together to be honest, but here&#8217;s how it goes so far:<\/p>\n<p>on Monday two long-time Mideast analysts blast the White House, accusing them of censoring parts of their text, an article they were writing for the OpEd section of the NYTimes;<\/p>\n<p>on Tuesday the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/12\/19\/washington\/19secret.html?ex=157680000&#038;en=579ea166b972c6c7&#038;ei=5124&#038;partner=permalink&#038;exprod=permalink\">NYTimes reports on this incident officially<\/a>;<\/p>\n<p>the authors, a married couple since 2003, are long-time analysts of the Middle East under multiple presidents, including Republican and Democrat; one of the authors, Flynt L. Leverett, previously worked for the CIA and the NSC;<\/p>\n<p>Today, the NYTimes published two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/12\/22\/opinion\/22precede.html?ex=157680000&#038;en=c3d26f4c435ca123&#038;ei=5124&#038;partner=permalink&#038;exprod=permalink\">opinion articles<\/a> by these authors, including the one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/12\/22\/opinion\/22leverett.html?ex=157680000&#038;en=139b20ea089401e3&#038;ei=5124&#038;partner=permalink&#038;exprod=permalink\">with the blacked out text<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, what&#8217;s interesting here is how the blacked out text is compiled: rather than simply being a string of data, that is the amount of letters within the original text blacked out as a block of removed text, you can actually see the text broken down, with each letter replaced by a lowercase &#8216;x&#8217;:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image341\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nicknormal.com\/normalblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/12\/nytimes-oped-highlight-trim.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"blacked out text\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now I&#8217;m not saying that &#8216;xxx&#8217; = &#8216;The&#8217; or that &#8216;xxxxxxxxx&#8217; = &#8216;terrorist&#8217; but it is interesting that you can see the breakdown of the text by highlighting it by clicking+scrolling with your mouse.
