of New York is currently being blanketed by a winter storm of snow.

Here is an image of my rooftop from this morning. It’s a really nice snow, at least 4″ thick so far, steadily approaching more! I was supposed to go upstate this weekend. I’ve only had two Saturdays off since Thanksgiving, tomorrow being the second, and was hoping to get a weekend in the Catskills. Unfortunately my ride couldn’t make it into the city for obvious reasons. I could take a bus, but end up having to pay $40 and probably be delayed 2-4 hours because of the weather. Additionally, I’m starting to come down with something, illness. Nearly everybody I live with has gotten sick over the past 6 weeks, so it’s no surprise, but I haven’t gotten sick in over 10 months so I’m hoping it’s just a slight sore throat (woke up with) and a mild headache (came on one hour ago). Hopefully it’ll pass. If I wind up not being able to travel upstate, I guess it’s best to beef up my immunity now, when going outside would prove exhaustive at best. Still, a friend said he has a stack of sleds…

those weather predictions came true. snow started to fall as I was climbing up to bed, at some point turned to rain but then just as quickly to ice – it’s naaaaaaaaasty out there! It’s a good thing today I’m supposed to stay in and make holiday gifts, cards, and watch a movie or two (such a demanding day!).

Finally, right!

As you can probably tell, with the strong sun, snow on rooftops will melt away this afternoon; it might stick where there are small patches of terra firma (like across the street), but since there ain’t much of that in NYC, it’s safe to say it’s already gone (as you can see on the street asphalt, sidewalks, etc.)

so yesterday a mosquito landed near me while i was at my workstation on the job. then today while walking to work some snow started to flurry about.
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON PEOPLE!?! It’s bleeding January in New York City! I don’t want mosquitoes. And I don’t want flurries. I want five feet of dense solidified water! I want snow up to my chin so when I walk through the snow paths all you see is my head bobbing along! I want to wear big boots. And I want to climb a hill by kicking and clawing into it, by digging myself in and moving just a couple feet at a time! I want WIIIINTTTERRRRRRR!

My friend and fellow artist Simo Alitalo wrote me this morning to inform me that Finland is without snow this winter. FINLAND… WITHOUT SNOW. I mean, cmon!! He writes:
Greetings from the darkness!
There is an old Finnish Christmas Carol where they sing that Christmas
is like a summer in the middle of winter.
The global warming is giving a new literal meaning to the song:
after the very warm year we are having extremely warm winter. No
snow, no ice, instead green grass and buds in bushes – and because
there is no snow the darkness is unbelievable!
The image up top was snapped from http://62.73.32.2/ , a URI Simo sent of a webcam pointed at a Finnish square. Look at how pitiful that Christmas tree near the middle looks. Just pitiful! Normally Finnish squares are a blanket of white!
