Zombies. My place. (for NYC dorks)

GAME NIGHT!

So my roomie Sarah and I have been thinking about having people over to play HUMANS!!! by Twilight Creations:

I’d like to multimedia the event in lots of ways. I’m thinking to project a zombie flick to distract each other while we hunt down HUMANS for food. Personally I’ve always been partial to Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive

but maybe a more traditional human-becomes-zombie-eats-more-humans movie is the way to go, instead of relying on some rat monkey virus to turn your mother into a monster whose belly serves the functions of womb, mouth and stomach and the neighbors you don’t like you serve custard with bloody ear. I don’t know maybe that’s just what I’m partial to.

Then again I don’t have any of my movies on me anymore as my Movie Server is still in storage.

I’d also like to see if someone’s up for making zombie snacks, like eyeball cupcakes or baklava shaped like fingers. Where have all my culinary friends moved to?

Maybe sometime next week? I’m in north Brooklyn, around Lorimer L subway. Leave a note in the comments here or poke me on my facebook, I promise I won’t bite back. Well maybe just a nibble.

write or i’ll bite

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

no that post title isn’t an allusion towards any masochistic desires on my part since I’m not writing as much as I used to around these parts, but rather the tagline of a new Sega game designed for Japanese gamers eager to advance their Engrish on the Nintendo DS. Pretty amazing, it uses the DS stylus and writing recognition to fight zombies – one of my most-feared nemeses in gaming, movies, and the likely extinction of the human race!

It’s unfortunate I don’t not know English, else this looks like it would be a lot of fun to play. However I do still have and treasure my copy of Typing of the Dead (bought at a GAME store in London for $1!), which like other users I rate easily above an 8.0. This game was especially instrumental in getting me to memorize my keyboard’s special character layout, type “%@!!#” or get cut in the face by some sickle thrown at you by a flying lizard, or full sentences “No finance charges will be incurred” or get chainsawed to pieces, those kinds of moments.

And I love Japanese sensibilities towards commercials, they’re fast-layered environments with lots of color, sound effects, speech, and text, and they rarely manage to “sell” you, but you find yourself hooked, even for 3:45 minutes! You’ll see:

However I admit I haven’t tried Typing of the Dead on my DVORAK layout TypeMatrix 2030. Perhaps some zombie hunting is in order!

office time killer

looking to kill time while at the office?

might I recommend flOw:

Originally developed as a flash game for the web, now available for download on Mac and PC, and soon-to-be released on the PlayStation3, flOw is a game that uses low-fi concept for high-fi returns: eat other lesser-organisms to gain abilities and strengths, and advance through the layers (red to go down, blue to go up) of this aquatic arena at your own pace — you can speed through holding your left mouse button to zip along or let go and just let the ripples carry you lazily along.

Developed by graduate student Jenova Chen of USC, flOw is based upon Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of flow. Zen-like… sure, office-time-killer… helllllss yeahhh!

stumbled upon this net artwork by Coco Fusco. ‘Turista Fronterizo’, or ‘Border Tourist’, lets you play (a Monopoly-esque board) as one of four characters – thankfully only temporarily, after all it’s only a game! An anthropology student, a ‘Binational Businessman’, a freelancer (lo que encuentre – whatever one finds) and a Huevón (a lazy person, a loafer). After you choose your role you get to experience, through low-fi rolling animated gifs, life, as it were, south of the border.
